South Carolina Teacher of the Year Drives Home a BMW X3

State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Mick Zais, announced Tuesday evening at a privately funded celebration that Amy McAllister-Skinner was named the 2012/2013 South Carolina Teacher of the Year.  As part of the celebration, BMW Manufacturing, the event’s premier sponsor, handed the Johnsonville High School English teacher the keys to a 2012 Alpine White BMW X3 xDrive35i equipped with the M Sport package.

Dr. David H. Swinton, President and CEO of Benedict College, was recently elected chair of the Member Presidents of the United Negro College Fund, the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, at the annual meeting of the UNCF board in New York City.

After a long, arduous search, the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department has a new Director.  Jeff Caton, of Moore, South Carolina, has agreed to be the Director of Parks and Recreation.

One of the first black students to graduate from Clemson shares his story

On March 12, at Hand Middle School, 2600 Wheat Street, Titus Duren, one of the first Black students to attend and graduate from Clemson University, will share his experiences with students.

His presentation will begin at 4 p.m. and will include film footage from the '60s and the Civil Rights Movement. Duren is on the planning committee to honor the 50th anniversary of the first African-American student to graduate from Clemson.

Sheriff Leon Lott is proud to announce that Corporal Christopher Duke has been named "Deputy of the Year" by American Legion Post 182 during a banquet at the Fort Jackson Officers Club. The yearly award recognizes officers from local Fire Departments, EMS and Law Enforcement as well as Military Officers.
